Food Critic

So we’ve finally arrived – flying the final leg in a big dirty Russian plane.

The food at Union Glacier is incredible, which came as a little bit of a surprise to me. It’s still nothing on Domino’s Doughballs, but what is?

It’s been great to finally get on the ice, and watching Captain Crookshank fall over several times was simply hilarious.

A lot of the time so far has been learning again and again how to put up a tent in these conditions. It’s vital we have that down to a fine art when the weather is against you.

What’s also been strange is the 24 hours of daylight. That’s taken some getting used to. It was weird yesterday sitting here at midnight in the light and not feeling tired.

But now we’re raring to go and just want to get out there. I can’t wait.

Talking 007 with Prince Charles

The training in Norway has been very useful and I leant a lot; like how to put up the tents and use the cooking stove. The best bit of all though was that we were given the Gucci kit (Julbo glasses) and a duvet jacket - It's very snug, you could curl up in a ball and you just didn’t want to take it off. One of the funniest moments of the trip was watching the experts, Justin and David, putting up a new four man tent and struggling! But it was nice to get away for a couple of days, and after all the training we’ve been doing each week it felt like a holiday! The view from the room was unbelievable - from our very own balcony, and after the days training I loved chilling out in the sauna. I had never been to Norway before and I have to say it’s a very nice place.

A couple of weeks later we went to Clarence House to meet Prince Charles, our Colonel in Chief of the regiment. This was another fantastic day: meeting him and chatting about the new James Bond film - he asked us if we'd seen it yet, but that would have been a little tricky considering the Premiere was only trhe night before! It was a really good day; it has made me want to go even more now and has made the experience even more incredible. Every week something new pops up. I just can’t wait to go and to finally get there and say that I’ve walked to the coldest place on Earth… -40C, treat yourself!
