About Walking With The Wounded

Since Walking With The Wounded was set up in 2010, ‘why do we need another service charity?’ is a question that has often been asked. There are many existing organizations and military charities, each doing a wonderful job for our wounded, but the founders of Walking With The Wounded still felt that there was something missing. One word summarized it –Inspiration.

Our armed forces today are asked to do so much in our name and on our behalf. Every day young men and women are risking their lives in extreme circumstances, and they do so with great professionalism and courage. Many have made the ultimate sacrifice, losing their lives in the course of duty, and we must not forget them.

During the course of these operations many young men and women also suffer horrific injuries. When they return home they face a very different future to the one they had planned and with challenges they never imagined.

Too often, however, our wounded are viewed with pity and sorrow. They don’t want this, but they do need our support. Walking With The Wounded wants to champion them, to show people how remarkable they are, and show how they face their future with the same courage and determination they demonstrate on the front line. They do still achieve amazing things.

For many their future outside the Armed Forces is unsure and they face a long road to recovery. For those who are medically discharged, finding a job must be the priority to secure the income which is vital for their security and that of their family.

In order to keep our military who have been injured in the public eye Walking With The Wounded undertakes inspirational expeditions to demonstrate the fortitude and bravery of our wounded. Not only will these show how extraordinary the team members are, but they will inspire others who face disability and daily challenges.

Walking With The Wounded hopes that, by raising awareness of the organisation in this way, it can raise significant funds to continue the work it does.

Walking With The Wounded is not a service or care provider. It works in partnership with expert organizations which can effectively deliver training, education, career transition advice and planning for the wounded.

Walking With The Wounded expeditions are all fully corporately sponsored and their funding is separate from the generous donations received by the Charity, meaning that money donated goes to directly helping those in need through the programmes which we fund.

Your donations go to the funding of these programmes:

The Military to Mentors course, run by Skillforce, trains wounded servicemen and women to work as mentors in the Skillforce schools programme throughout some of the most deprived areas in the UK. The scheme is proving hugely successful at getting children increasingly motivated and involved in full time education.  Skillforce is a dynamic education charity which is working in schools in some of the most deprived areas of the UK.

The Warrior Programme is a three day personal transformational and support programme which empowers traumatised serving men and women and veterans to address complex challenges which have prevented them from leading a normal and fulfilled life. This course helps them start their journey back into the work place.

The Back to Work Programme, powered by The Poppy Factory, delivers support leading to employment for our wounded ex-servicemen and women, providing career development advice and vocational assessments, the sourcing of appropriate employers, and suitable roles within the correct culture of employment. The Poppy Factory will create employment for 500 disabled ex-service personnel over the next five years with this scheme. The Poppy Factory, which was established in 1922, has a simple aim – to enable wounded, injured and sick ex-service men and women in finding paid, meaningful civilian employment.

Walking With The Wounded also works directly with corporates who are looking to employ wounded servicemen and women, identifying the right employment for those with the right qualifications. It is vital that those who have been injured are aware of their own strengths and weaknesses, and are able to understand their aptitude so they look for the right job in the right sector. Walking With The Wounded helps to coordinate this process, working with other organisations which have the required expertise. There is extraordinary willingness in the corporate sector to help these young men and women find work, but it is vital that the right job is identified for each individual for the right reason. Walking With The Wounded is constantly working to fund more projects, and will be adding to its existing educational programme portfolio in 2012.
